A synthetic organic acid used as an acidity regulator and flavour enhancer — it adds a sharp, tart taste to foods. Found in chewing gum, flavoured drinks, desserts, confectionery, and yogurt-based products. It's roughly three times more acidic than citric acid, so smaller amounts are needed. Generally recognised as safe by EFSA and FDA within approved limits. It's poorly absorbed by the body compared to other food acids, which keeps its metabolic impact low. No significant safety controversies at typical food use levels.
