A synthetic azo dye that gives food a bright yellow-orange colour. Found in mustard, sauces, fish roe, processed meats, and many packaged foods across 26 different categories. EFSA reviewed it and lowered the acceptable daily intake due to concerns about kidney effects in animal studies. Like other azo dyes, it must carry a warning label in the EU: 'may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.' People with aspirin sensitivity may also react to it.
