Characteristics

Additive NamePolydextrose
E No.E 1200
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

A synthetic soluble fibre used as a bulking agent, sugar replacer, and prebiotic in low-calorie foods. It adds texture and body without many calories — around 1 kcal/g. Found in sugar-free products, diet foods, and some beverages. Generally considered safe by EFSA and FDA. In large amounts it can cause digestive discomfort — bloating or loose stools — since gut bacteria ferment it slowly. Most people tolerate moderate amounts well.
