A synthetic red dye used to give foods and drinks a vivid crimson colour. Found in processed cheeses, flavoured wines, preserved vegetables, and various processed foods across Europe. Banned in the US, Canada, and Japan due to safety concerns. EFSA has set an acceptable daily intake, but studies have linked it — along with other azo dyes — to hyperactivity in children. EU law requires a warning label on products containing it.
