A synthetic red dye, once widely used in foods and drinks. It was banned in the US in 1976 over cancer concerns, though EFSA still permits it in a narrow range of products — mainly fish roe, aromatised wines, and certain spirit drinks. The EU allows only very limited use, which reflects ongoing caution around this dye.
