A modified starch made by treating regular starch with oxidising agents, which improves its thickening and binding properties. It helps create smoother textures in dairy products and processed foods for young children. Authorised only in a limited number of food categories under EU regulations. Generally considered safe at the levels used in food. It is digestible like regular starch, though people with starch sensitivities should be aware of its presence. No significant safety concerns have been raised by EFSA.
