A modified starch used as a thickener and stabiliser, made by chemically treating regular starch with phosphate groups. Found in low-fat dairy products, infant cereals, and young children's milk drinks. The modification improves texture and prevents separation in processed foods. Generally considered safe by EFSA, including for use in baby and young children's foods at regulated levels. The body breaks it down like ordinary starch. No significant health concerns at typical dietary exposure.
