A dark brown colouring made by heating sugar — the simplest form of caramel colour, produced without ammonia or sulphites. Found in soft drinks, sauces, and baked goods to give that familiar brown hue. Considered safe by EFSA and FDA. No significant health concerns at levels typically used in food. Of the four caramel colour types, this is the cleanest one.
