A synthetic brown colouring made by heating sugar with sulphite compounds. It gives foods a deep amber or brown colour. Approved by EFSA and used in a very narrow range of products — authorised in only one food category, which limits overall exposure significantly. Some caramel colours have raised questions about processing byproducts, but E150b specifically has a limited presence in the food supply. Regulatory bodies consider it safe at permitted levels.
