A synthetic black dye used to give food a dark, visually striking colour. Approved in the EU but banned in the USA, Canada, and several other countries due to safety concerns. Found in very few products — mainly some processed fish items. EFSA has set an acceptable daily intake, but some studies suggest potential allergic reactions, particularly in people sensitive to aspirin.
