A synthetic solvent and humectant — it keeps food moist and helps dissolve flavourings, colours, and other additives. Found mainly in some flavouring preparations, not widely used directly in everyday foods. Generally recognised as safe by FDA and EFSA at typical levels. However, it is also an industrial chemical used in antifreeze and cosmetics, which raises reasonable questions about long-term dietary exposure, though authorised food-grade use is tightly restricted.
