A synthetic brown dye used to colour processed fish, seafood, and some meat products. It belongs to the azo dye family, which means it is entirely artificial with no natural equivalent. Like other azo dyes, it may trigger reactions in people sensitive to aspirin or those with asthma. EFSA has reviewed it and considers it safe at permitted levels, but its use is restricted to only a handful of food categories across the EU.
