A natural orange-yellow colourant derived from the seeds of the achiote tree, native to South America. Used in cheeses, butter, and some snack foods to give a warm golden hue. It has been removed from the EU's authorised additives list, meaning it is no longer permitted in food products sold within the EU. Some people experience allergic reactions, which likely contributed to the regulatory decision.
