A white pigment used to make foods look brighter and more opaque — found in sweets, chewing gum, and cake decorations. It's synthetic, made from mineral titanium. In 2021, EFSA concluded it can no longer be considered safe, citing concerns about potential DNA damage from nanoparticles accumulating in the body. It was banned as a food additive in the EU from 2022. Still permitted in some other countries.
