A synthetic red dye used exclusively on the surface of edible cheese rinds — one of the most narrowly permitted food colours in the EU. It gives certain hard cheeses their distinctive red wax-like coating appearance. Not consumed in significant amounts, as it sits on the outer rind. Generally considered safe at these limited levels by EFSA.

Conditions of Use

This additive is authorised to be used in the following 1 food category:

Period of application: from 1 August 2014
Footnote 67: Maximum limit for aluminium coming from aluminium lakes of E 120 cochineal, carminic acid, carmines and E 180 litholrubine BK 10 mg/kg. No other aluminium lakes may be used. For the purposes of Article 22 (1) (g) of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 that limit shall apply from 1 February 2013
