A synthetic preservative from the paraben family, used to prevent mould and yeast growth in food. Authorized in very few food categories in the EU — one of the most restricted food preservatives currently in use. Parabens are endocrine disruptors at high doses, meaning they can mimic oestrogen in the body. EFSA reviewed parabens and set a strict acceptable daily intake. Occasional exposure from food is considered low risk, but cumulative exposure from food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals combined is worth being mindful of.
