A synthetic preservative from the paraben family, used to prevent mould and bacterial growth. Found in very few food products — it's only authorised in one food category, typically flavoured drinks or similar. Parabens are widely debated due to weak hormonal activity detected in lab studies, though EFSA considers current food exposure levels acceptable. Still, many manufacturers have moved away from parabens voluntarily.
