A synthetic preservative from the paraben family, used to prevent mould and yeast growth. Found in some sauces, confectionery glazes, and food supplements — though its permitted use in food is quite limited in the EU. Parabens are weakly estrogenic, meaning they can mimic oestrogen in the body. EFSA reviewed this and set a group acceptable daily intake for parabens combined. Considered safe at current permitted levels, but some people prefer to avoid parabens where possible.
