A synthetic preservative from the paraben family, used to prevent mould and yeast growth in food. Authorised in very few food categories — its use in food is quite limited compared to related parabens. Parabens are weak endocrine disruptors, meaning they can mildly interfere with hormone activity. EFSA has raised concerns and set a group acceptable daily intake for parabens overall. Fine in trace amounts, but worth noting if you prefer to minimise synthetic preservatives.
