A synthetic antimicrobial preservative used to prevent surface mould, yeast, and bacterial growth in processed meats. It works by disrupting microbial cell membranes, extending shelf life without affecting taste or smell. Approved by EFSA and FDA at low concentrations, with no major safety concerns identified at permitted levels. Found mainly in heat-treated packaged meat products.
