Malic acid

Characteristics

Additive NameMalic acid
E No.E 296
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

A natural organic acid found abundantly in apples, cherries, and grapes — it's what gives them that pleasant tartness. Used as an acidity regulator and flavour enhancer in fruit juices, jams, and processed foods to sharpen taste and balance sweetness. Generally considered safe at normal food levels. EFSA has not set a specific daily intake limit for healthy adults. Very large amounts may cause mild digestive discomfort, but realistic dietary exposure poses no known risk.
