A synthetic organic acid used as an acidity regulator and flavour enhancer — it adds a sharp, tart taste to foods. Found in chewing gum, flavoured drinks, desserts, confectionery, and yogurt-based products. It's roughly three times more acidic than citric acid, so smaller amounts are needed. No significant safety controversies at typical food use levels.
