A synthetic antioxidant used to prevent fats and oils from going rancid. Found mainly in chewing gum, where it is one of the very few food categories it is approved for in the EU. Generally considered safe at permitted levels. Some animal studies have raised mild concerns about hormonal effects, but human exposure from food is extremely low. EFSA has set an acceptable daily intake, and typical consumption remains well below it.
