A synthetic antioxidant used to prevent fats and oils from going rancid. Found mainly in crisps, snack foods, chewing gum, and some processed meats. Authorised in very limited food categories in the EU. The WHO classifies BHA as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B), based on animal studies. EFSA has expressed concerns and keeps its acceptable daily intake under review. Best avoided where alternatives exist.
