Phosphoric acid

Characteristics

Additive NamePhosphoric acid
E No.E 338
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

A strong inorganic acid used mainly to give soft drinks — especially colas — their sharp, tangy bite. It also acts as an acidity regulator and helps prevent microbial growth. Fully synthetic, not derived from natural sources. Regular high intake, mostly through cola drinks, is linked to lower bone density, as it may interfere with calcium absorption. EFSA considers it safe at approved levels, but frequent cola consumption is worth watching, particularly in children and teenagers.
