Sodium phosphates

Characteristics

Additive NameSodium phosphates
E No.E 339
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

Acidity regulator, emulsifier, and stabiliser used in processed foods and infant formula. Keeps products smooth, prevents separation, and controls pH. Found in baby foods, milk-based drinks, processed meats, and baked goods. Phosphates are naturally present in many foods, but synthetic versions in processed products add to overall phosphate intake. High long-term phosphate consumption is linked to cardiovascular and kidney stress, particularly in people with kidney disease. EFSA recommends monitoring total dietary phosphate, especially in vulnerable groups like infants.
