Propane-1, 2-diol alginate

Characteristics

Additive NamePropane-1, 2-diol alginate
E No.E 405
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

A thickener and emulsifier derived from alginate — a natural polysaccharide found in brown seaweed — chemically modified with propylene glycol to improve its solubility and stability. Found in salad dressings, ice cream, bakery fillings, sauces, and chewing gum. It helps bind water and fat together, giving products a smooth, consistent texture. Generally considered safe by EFSA and FDA at typical usage levels. The propylene glycol component is also widely considered safe in food. No major health controversies are associated with it, though like most seaweed-derived additives, very high intake may cause mild digestive discomfort in sensitive individuals.
