Characteristics

Additive NameSucrose acetate isobutyrate

TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

A synthetic emulsifier and stabiliser used to keep flavour oils evenly suspended in drinks — particularly in flavoured alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. It prevents the oily components from separating and floating to the top, giving drinks a consistent appearance and taste throughout their shelf life. Approved by EFSA and FDA with a relatively narrow authorised use in beverages only. No major safety concerns have been raised at permitted levels, though it is a highly processed synthetic compound with limited long-term research.
