A synthetic cellulose derivative used as a binder and coating agent in food supplements and tablets. It helps hold ingredients together or forms a slow-release shell around capsules. Authorised in very few food categories, so everyday exposure is minimal. Considered safe by EFSA — it passes through the body largely undigested.
