A synthetic modified cellulose used as a binder and disintegrant — mainly in food supplement tablets and capsules. It helps tablets hold their shape and then break apart properly when swallowed. Not digested or absorbed by the body, so it passes through the gut inert. Authorised in the EU for a very narrow use: solid food supplements only. No significant safety concerns at the levels used.
