A synthetic stabiliser and binder made by chemically modifying cellulose — the structural material found in plant cell walls. It helps tablets and powder sachets hold their shape and prevents ingredients from clumping together. Approved for use in a very narrow range of products: tablet sweeteners, powder sweeteners, and solid food supplements. Not a widely used additive. No significant safety concerns have been raised by EFSA at the low levels consumed through these products.

Conditions of Use

This additive is authorised to be used in the following 3 food categories:

Maximum Level = 50000 mg/kg
11.4.3table-top sweeteners in tablets
Maximum Level = 50000 mg/kg
17.1food supplements supplied in a solid form excluding food supplements for infants and young children’,
Maximum Level = 30000 mg/kg
except food supplements in chewable form
