A synthetic emulsifier made by combining sugar (sucrose) with fatty acids. It helps fat and water mix smoothly, improving texture in infant formula, dairy drinks, and some processed foods. Approved by EFSA and FDA, with strict limits especially in baby products. Generally considered safe at authorised levels, though its use in infant formula warrants careful adherence to recommended amounts.

Conditions of Use

This additive is authorised to be used in the following 5 food categories:

13.1.1infant formulae as defined by Regulation (EU) No 609/2013
Maximum Level = 120 mg/kg
only products containing hydrolysed proteins, peptides or amino acids
Footnote 14: If more than one of the substances E 322, E 471, E 472c and E 473 are added to a foodstuff, the maximum level established for that foodstuff for each of those substances is lowered with that relative part as is present of the other substances together in that foodstuff
