A strong mineral acid used in tiny amounts to regulate acidity during food processing — not as a final ingredient. It helps control pH in starch processing and some dairy or cereal-based products, and is typically neutralised or removed before the product reaches consumers. Naturally present in human stomach acid, which puts its chemistry in perspective. At the trace levels permitted in food, it poses no health concern. Regulatory bodies including EFSA consider it safe within authorised uses. The appearance in baby foods sounds alarming, but concentrations are strictly controlled and the acid does not persist in the final product.
