A strong inorganic acid used in food processing primarily to adjust acidity levels. It appears in very limited food applications — mainly in the production of certain alcoholic beverages like wine and beer, where it helps control pH during fermentation. At the tiny concentrations permitted, it is neutralised and poses no risk. EFSA considers it safe within authorised uses.
