An anti-caking agent and release agent used to prevent powders from clumping and stop food from sticking to surfaces during manufacturing. Found mainly in chewing gum and some powdered foods. Synthetic mineral compound derived from calcium and silicon dioxide. Generally considered safe by EFSA and FDA. It passes through the body largely unabsorbed and has no known toxic effects at levels used in food. One of the more inert additives in the food supply.
