A synthetic wax-like substance used as a glazing agent and surface coating. It gives dried fruits, candies, and chewing gum their shiny appearance while also preventing moisture loss and sticking. Produced by polymerizing and hydrogenating decene, a petroleum-derived compound. Considered safe by EFSA at current permitted levels. It is not absorbed by the body and passes through the digestive system largely unchanged. Not widely controversial, but it is a fully synthetic additive with no nutritional value.
