A synthetic wax-like substance used as a glazing agent and surface coating. It gives dried fruits, candies, and chewing gum their shiny appearance while also preventing moisture loss and sticking. Produced by polymerizing and hydrogenating decene, a petroleum-derived compound. Considered safe by EFSA at current permitted levels. It is not absorbed by the body and passes through the digestive system largely unchanged. Not widely controversial, but it is a fully synthetic additive with no nutritional value.

This additive is authorised to be used in the following 4 food categories:

Maximum Level = 2000 mg/kg
only dried fruit as glazing agent
5.2Other confectionery including breath freshening micro-sweets
Maximum Level = 2000 mg/kg
only as glazing agent for sugar confectionery
5.3chewing gum
Maximum Level = 2000 mg/kg
as glazing agent only
5.4Decorations, coatings and fillings, except fruit-based fillings covered by category 4.2.4
Maximum Level = 2000 mg/kg
as glazing agent only
