A synthetic wax-based coating agent derived from montan wax, which comes from lignite (brown coal). Used to give a shiny, polished appearance to the surface of fresh citrus fruits and melons, and to reduce moisture loss during storage and transport. Authorised in the EU only for surface treatment of fresh citrus and melons. Considered safe at the levels used, as it stays on the outer peel — the part most people don't eat. Still worth washing fruit thoroughly before cutting.
