A synthetic wax coating used on fresh fruit and vegetables to reduce moisture loss, slow ripening, and improve shelf life. It gives produce that familiar glossy, polished appearance you often see on apples and citrus fruits in supermarkets. Approved in the EU only for whole fresh produce, not processed foods. Considered safe at the levels used — you consume virtually none of it, as it stays on the surface.
