A synthetic compound — essentially urea — used in chewing gum to soften the texture and help release flavour. It is one of the more unusual additives, as urea is also naturally produced by the human body as a metabolic waste product. Authorised in the EU strictly for chewing gum only, reflecting its very limited application. At the tiny amounts used, it is considered safe by EFSA.
