An inert noble gas used as a packaging gas to displace oxygen and protect food from oxidation and spoilage. Found in modified atmosphere packaging for delicate products. It is completely chemically unreactive and passes through the body without any interaction whatsoever. No safety concerns exist — it is one of the most benign substances permitted in food use.
