An intense artificial sweetener, around 200 times sweeter than sugar, used to reduce calories in food and drinks. Common in diet sodas, sugar-free chewing gum, yogurts, candies, and baked goods — often combined with other sweeteners to mask a slight bitter aftertaste. EFSA and FDA consider it safe at approved levels. Some animal studies at very high doses raised questions about effects on metabolism and gut bacteria, but evidence in humans remains inconclusive. Acceptable daily intake is set at 9 mg per kg of body weight.
