A bulk sweetener derived from sucrose, used to replace sugar in sweets, chocolates, and diabetic-friendly products. It provides about half the calories of regular sugar and has a minimal effect on blood sugar levels. Generally considered safe by EFSA and FDA. Like other sugar alcohols, consuming larger amounts — typically over 20–30g per day — can cause bloating, gas, or a laxative effect in sensitive individuals.
