A bulk sweetener and sugar alcohol derived from hydrogenated glucose syrup. Found in sugar-free and reduced-calorie products — ice cream, jams, chocolates, chewing gum, and baked goods. It provides sweetness and texture without causing the same blood sugar spike as regular sugar, making it popular in diabetic-friendly foods. Like most sugar alcohols, it can cause bloating, gas, and loose stools when consumed in larger amounts. Generally recognised as safe by EFSA. Products containing it are typically required to carry a warning that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect.
