A natural sugar alcohol found in birch trees, corn cobs, and many fruits and vegetables. Used as a low-calorie sweetener in sugar-free gums, mints, and some dental care products. Provides about 40% fewer calories than sugar and doesn't spike blood glucose — making it popular for diabetics. Generally well-tolerated in small amounts, but larger doses (typically above 30–40g per day) can cause bloating, gas, and diarrhea due to its laxative effect. EFSA considers it safe at approved levels. Worth noting: highly toxic to dogs even in small amounts.
