Characteristics

Additive NameAdvantame
E No.E 969
TypeIndividual Substance
In plain language

An ultra-high-intensity synthetic sweetener — about 20,000 times sweeter than sugar and 100 times sweeter than aspartame. Used in tiny amounts in confectionery, chewing gum, cereals, fish products, and tabletop sweeteners. Because doses are so minuscule, it delivers virtually zero calories. Approved by EFSA and FDA, with both agencies considering it safe at authorised levels. Unlike aspartame, it does not require phenylalanine warnings for people with PKU, as the body converts negligible amounts. One of the newer additives on the market, with a still-limited long-term research base.
